The coolest rock is about a rock who has been around. The rock mentions that it is very old. It tells the reader of how he first became a rock by magma exploding out of a volcano, and how when he got cooled down and became a solid he turned into a igneous rock, and that he did not do much moving but the different types of weather change it, like when it rolled down a hill into a river where it sunk to the bottom and more rocked piled on top of it, it then became a sedimentary rock. As the time passed it got buried deeper and deeper, with extreme heat change, it transformed into a metamorphic rock. Reading this book brought back memories to when I was learning about rocks and read a rock book in elementary school, it made me feel well informed again of what types of rocks there are on earth. It drew my attention because the story talked about the story of one rock of how it evolved throughout years and years of time.

The Coolest Rock is first person point of view because it uses the word “I” in the story. We see it from its view because we can live, act, feel, and think of what things the rock goes through as the rock is telling the story. When he says “Once I was out, I started to change” and “As I got cooler, I also got harder. Soon I was a solid rock” The rock also says “In those days I was a much larger and heavier than I am today.” I think the author did the story in first person point of view so we can feel and travel through time like the rock would experience its life. The only character in this story is a rock he is the round character, because we can see the rocks personality traits that it shows in the story by the images and text in the story. When it says “I was a nice size, and good-looking too, if I say so myself.” On page 8, as he is holding a mirror looking at itself and touching its head. Also when it says “Now I had wavy stripes. I was even fancier than before. In fact I was the fanciest I could get.” And when it says “I’m a rock. I’ve been around.” As it is smiling at the readers with its thumps up in the image. Is shows that it is confident and it likes its life that it has, no matter if people think rocks are boring. I think the author did this so readers can get more excited to learn and read about rocks by adding personality traits to it. I know it got me more engaged to read this story by adding those personality traits to the rock.

Some visual elements that the illustrations of the rock show exactly how it is feeling through the entire rock cycle, in page 12, we see different images of the rock, one is showing he is feeling hot because there is a sun above it and the rock is the color red which indicates a hot temperature, the rock is also showing that he is sweating and his face expression is a frowning face. In page 12 we also see that the rock is attempting to cover itself with an umbrella from the rain and wind weather, his facial expression is worried and scared because there is also little pieces of rock falling off of him. Some images are drawings while some images in the story are actual photographs of nature. I think the author did this so we can see how it looks like in the real world and the drawn illustrations so we can see how the rock feels. I also noticed that the text in the story varied from the text being in a box, in the image itself or below or above the image, and some text like the words “Hot, Cooler, or Solid” were in different colors red for hot, blue for cool, and black for solid. I think the author did this so the word and images can relate to each other, and give it a better understanding and excite the reader with colored text.

I think the subgenre of this book is earth science, because the story talks about the three different rock types there are on earth, and the story describes what igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks are. The story also gives examples of the types of rocks and their name. The book also gives definitions of what magma, lava, and what a sediment are. In page 21 it has an image of the rock cycle, explaining how the cycle works. It presents the definitions also in an understanding matter for children and it also tells us how to pronounce the word, and it also shows photographs of how the three different types of rock would look like in the real world.
