I wish used copies weren t so dear I would love to send a copy to the peeps at Bundy RanchAt this point, the American people have little choice other than to accept the challenge of a recalcitrant, uncompromising, and coddled minority the public should boot every last one of them off the public lands The nation no longer needs them. This was an interesting read, despite it being a bit dry here and there, and I found it highly educational on how destructive cattle are to the western lands, plants, water sources and native species and the importance of properly caring for the land to keep it for everyone to enjoy, not just the western ranchers and their federally subsidized grazing fees The husband and wife team that wrote this spent time managing the Malheur Field Station that is adjacent to the Malheur Wildlife Refuge, and from what I understand, they had some kerfuffles of their own back in the 80s with the welfare ranchers in the area I ll just quote a bit to give potential readers what s insideNo wonder the cowboys were so intent upon silencing us, for theirs is a story of special privilege, ruthless greed, plunder of public coffers, and violations of public trusts that boggles belief That story had to be told As new states joined the Union, each received extensive tracts of federal land for support of schools and local governments In most states, much of this state land was sold to wealthy ranchers and speculators for a few cents or a few dollars an acre Ranchers choosing to trespass on public lands are fully aware that the risks and costs are minor compared to the potential gains for undetected violations The seemingly harmless old cow has rendered millions of acres of western rangeland to a state of virtual worthlessness, and what is most distressing , the damage cannot be repaired in a reasonable length of time for all practical purposes the damage is permanent Used copies are priced dearly at the time this review was written, but I was able to get a copy via interlibrary loan Good article on why federal land should stay federal here.An excellent roundup of the kerfuffles at the Malheur Wildlife Refuge here,

This book had a tendency to make me mad as I read it It was written in 1983 and has an obvious bias that is still relevant today Based on the facts sewn together in this story, Linda Taylor the Welfare Queen of Ronald Reagan fame was an urban cowboy It explodes the Western Cowboy myth and uncovers how we as a nation subsidize their continued bad behavior The case is made that until citizens become informed there is little hope for change Public lands in the West will continue to be dest This book had a tendency to make me mad as I read it It was written in 1983 and has an obvious bias that is still relevant today Based on the facts sewn together in this story, Linda Taylor the Welfare Queen of Ronald Reagan fame was an urban cowboy It explodes the Western Cowboy myth and uncovers how we as a nation subsidize their continued bad behavior The case is made that until citizens become informed there is little hope for change Public lands in the West will continue to be destroyed

At 35 years this book still feels very relevant It is disturbing that so little has changed in the West regarding cattlemen as evidence by recent events in Oregon Still worth reading Thank you to the Ferguson s for writing and excellent account of the situation between cattlemen and public lands.
